Dry Stone Masonry - Or Dry Stone Walling - is a specialty of ours. We find the look and feel of natural stone can’t be beat - especially with Madison’s older homes. This is a skill that few firms really excel at. Madison is lucky to have a few great contractors working in the medium. Unfortunately, there are a lot of companies out there that just don’t get how to do it right.

There are some relatively simple rules to the work. “Two over one and one over two” is an old saying. Basically this means “DON’T HAVE THE VERTICAL JOINTS BETWEEN STONES ALIGNING.” Having the seams atop each other creates a weak spot in the wall that can be more easily pushed out than if the wall were better knitted together.

There are some other simple rules, like ensuring drainage is adequately managed and enough wall is buried to prevent the toe of the wall from being pushed outwards by frost action and other pressures. What’s not simple is fitting irregular stone together in a way that looks (and functions) great for decades. ’d like to think we’re pretty good at it.
