Near-West Council Ring
This Madison, WI client had a sloping back yard with wonderfully-overgrown gardens. There was a lot beauty and love evident in the gardens, but no real “resting space” - either for the garden or for the eye. The gardens were simply, “too much.”
We created a central focal point for the gardens in the form of a council ring.
The finished space seamlessly integrates relaxation and mindfulness, serving as an ideal location for yoga or gathering around a small fire in the chiminea. This design pays homage to the rich history of landscape architecture in the Midwest, particularly the concepts introduced by renowned Wisconsin landscape architect Jens Jensen. Jensen’s deep appreciation for the region’s natural beauty, combined with his advocacy for native plants and natural stonework, has been a guiding inspiration for our work.
Jensen’s legacy includes numerous projects that enhanced urban parks in Chicago and private estates, earning him the title of the Dean of Prairie Landscape Design. His induction into the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame reflects his enduring impact on sustainable landscaping practices. Our approach continues to draw from his principles, ensuring that each project not only enriches the aesthetics of a home but also honors the ecological heritage of our area.
